Sometimes it is so senseless…

On Friday I worked at Club 3 Degrees. At around 11:30, I happened to be outside on the street and heard a sound that made me think of an engine backfiring. I didn’t think much of it until I saw a taller guy in a red shirt run past holding a red hat in his left hand. His right hand was inside his hat. A second or two later, a Minneapolis police officer rounded the corner and started shouting at the guy to stop and get down on the ground. The guy turned around and as he did, his right hand came out from behind his hat and he was holding a gun. I was about 20 feet from him. I don’t know if he saw me, but I was the only one in his line of sight as he turned towards the police officer.

I just froze as he turned back and started running down the alley in front of the club. The police officer that was chasing him had his tazer out and he started running down the alley after him. A few seconds later, another officer was running after the first. He had his gun out. All of this happened in slow motion for me, but it was probably only about a minute or two. It was very surreal as we started getting everyone out of the entry way of the club and keeping people from leaving for a few minutes.

I just read the official story in the Star Tribune. It was a random shooting and he killed a guy that was out with his friends. I can’t help thinking that since it was random, I could have been shot too as he turned towards me to look at the cops. I was the only one on that part of the street. I am still in a bit of shock.

Thanks be to God for keeping me invisible to him.
